Regular backwashing is a very important part of keeping your pool
clean and maintaining an effective filtration system. For the Hayward
Pro-Grid series, it is a simple process and can be completed in just a
few steps.
First identify the size of your filter by looking for the model number on the chart which is displayed on the side of the filter (See below). This information is needed to determine how much D.E. to replace back into the filter once backwashing is complete.

Step 1: Turn off the pump from the circuit breaker or timer box.
Step 2: Open up the waste valve and/or roll out the waste line.
Step 3: Push down and turn the multiport to the BACKWASH position. Turn the pump back on and watch the eyeglass as the dirty D.E. water passes through. Leave it running on backwash for 2 minutes.
Step 4: Turn the pump off again, move the multiport to the RINSE position and turn pump back on. Leave it running on RINSE for 1 minute.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until eyeglass is showing clean water running through it while on backwash. This means that all of the D.E. has been washed out.
Step 6: Shut off the pump once again, turn the multiport to the FILTER position and turn the system back on. Use the information provided on the chart to determine the proper amount of D.E. and add directly into the skimmer while filter is running.
How to backwash a Hayward Per-Flex Bump Handle Filter:
Backwashing the Per-Flex filter is similar to the Pro-Grid filter except it contains a bump handle which is used to loosen up the dirt and D.E. from inside the filter. This allows for greater flow and allows it to drain out. Once again, use the chart (see below) to determine the right amount of D.E. to add once backwashing is complete.

Step 1: Turn off the pump from the circuit breaker or timer box.
Step 2: Open up the waste valve and/or remove drain plug.
Step 3: Push the handle up and down slowly about 20-30 times. This is known as "bumping" this type of filter. Turn the pump back on and watch the dirty D.E. flow out through the waste line. Leave it running for about 2 minutes like this, or until the water being pumped out is clear again.
Step 4: Turn the pump off again, close the waste line and turn pump back on. Leave it running for about 1 minute or until the filter fills back up with water.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until only clean water is running out through the waste line. This means that all of the D.E. has been washed out.
Step 6: Shut off the pump once again, close waste valve and/or reinsert drain plug and turn the system back on. Use the information provided on the chart to determine the proper amount of D.E. and add directly into the skimmer while filter is running.
When to Bump vs. Bump and Backwash:
You can use the bump feature in between backwashes to boost the filter's water flow and regenerate filtration without having to replace the D.E. like you would with a full backwash. To bump, simply turn off filter system and then move the handle up and down without opening any waste lines or valves. This will reposition the D.E. inside the filter, regenerating the D.E.'s effectiveness. Turn filter back on.
How to Backwash Sand Filters:
Backwashing a sand filter is very similar to backwashing a Hayward Pro-Grid D.E. filter except there is no replacement of D.E. or sand afterward. The sand should be replaced about once every 5 years. After 5 years, the sand loses its filtration efficiency and the filter cycle must run even longer to get the same effect.
Step 1: Turn off the pump from the circuit breaker or timer box.
Step 2: Open up the waste valve and/or roll out the waste line.
Step 3: Push down and turn the multiport to the BACKWASH position. Turn the pump back on and watch the eyeglass as the dirty water passes through. Leave it running on backwash for 2 minutes.
